Champions Mindset

Our theory is that committed players are able to outperform more ‘talented’ players under pressure. So what is a committed player, how do they prepare differently and why does it lead to them delivering when it matters?

For us a committed player was clearly evident in Augusta - Dustin Johnson looked like he was focused, controlled and even comfortable….how? Under the spotlight of millions and with the chance to write himself into the history books, history suggesting he’s not immune to the debilitating effects of pressure (like the rest of us!) given his previous inability to close out majors, it always looked inevitable.

Focused - He was able to stay in his own bubble, like the cliché goes play one shot at a time and leave the unhelpful baggage of poor shots behind.

Controlled - He only played 3 drives at 100% in 72 holes, many 3 woods and “fairway finder” drives - we call that first gear. Could you show that level of control? With so much focused attention he was able to make informed decisions while in the heat of battle and not let external (uncontrollable factors - DeChambeau etc) effect him.

Comfortable - Playing your ‘normal’ and staying relaxed when it really matters and committing to what you can control.

It’s easier said than done - unless you practice to perform. Purposeful practice is where week in week out EVERY shot counts. For those of us with work commitments and growing families it means every precious moment of practice needs to be purposeful and know that objectively YOU are a better golfer!

The way this manifests into delivering better performances is three fold. It enables you to develop the space to think, to make informed decisions as you genuinely know you can always make simple shots in 1st gear. Therefore, what is actually required on each hole to meet my objective 90, 80 or 70. The self talk/dialogue in your mind actually starts to help you (like having a caddie) to look at the lie, slope and possible dangers and commit to the ‘right shot at the right time’. Finally, and most importantly when you are stood over the ball and you have made all the practice swings, waggles etc and the time comes to make the shot. You believe in the process, stay in the implicit and just play!

We at Grooves golf are revolutionizing how golf tuition looks from isolated swing lessons to holistic coaching where the coaches are as committed as our players to see them achieve their potential.

“We guarantee to make you a better golfer, all you need is the will.”
